14 people shot, including 3 children, in East Garfield Park. ‘It’s over in three seconds.’
Fourteen people were shot, including three children, in a shooting in East Garfield Park on the West Side Monday night, Chicago police said.
The children are 3, 11 and 13 years old, Supt. David Brown told reporters. All three were in serious condition. The other victims ranged in age from 31 to 56, police said.
The shooting happened around 9 p.m., when some people gathered in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street for a vigil and others were out for Halloween, police said. It is not known who the vigil was for.
“It was over in three seconds,” Brown said outside Stroger Hospital, where several injured people were taken. “The car pulls out after driving and firing randomly into the crowd.
“We don’t have a motive,” he said, adding that officials believe there were two shooters.
“We’re always concerned about retaliation, obviously, but we don’t know enough about it, whether it involved a gang conflict or a personal conflict, but as soon as we know we’ll share with the public,” Brown said. “And obviously we’re deploying extra police resources in the area to make sure we can prevent any retaliation if it’s something that’s real.”
All the victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life threatening, police said. A 37-year-old man and a 48-year-old man were in critical condition, police said. The largest number of injured were taken to Stroger Hospital.

A woman was hit by a car while trying to escape the shooting, police said. It was in fair condition with scrapes on its body. No one was in custody.
Brown said the shooting was captured on police surveillance video, which investigators have reviewed. Detectives are still waiting for the victims to finish being treated so they can interview them.
A reward of up to $15,000 has been offered for information leading to charges or a conviction. Anyone with information was asked to submit a tip cpdtip.com.
