Haunting Audio Reveals the Ghostly Sound of Earth’s Magnetic Field : ScienceAlert

The European Space Agency (ESA) released 5 minutes of terrifying crackling noise this week – revealing what the Earth’s magnetic field sounds like.

Earth’s internal magnetism, called the magnetosphere, generates a comet-shaped field around the planet’s surface that protects against harmful solar and cosmic particle radiation, as well as erosion of the atmosphere from the solar wind, according to NASA.

Researchers from the Technical University of Denmark took magnetic signals, measured by ESAs Swarm Satellite Mission dedicated to investigating the magnetic field, converting it into sound.

The resulting 5 minute audio includes terrifying crackling and crackling sounds, as well as deep breathing-like sounds that social media listeners describe as “frightening” and “spine tingles freaky.”

Since the discovery was unveiled on October 24, speakers in Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen, Denmark, have broadcast the recording three times a day. Plans are to keep playing it every day at 8am, 1pm and 7pm through October 30th.

“We got access to a very interesting sound system consisting of more than 30 speakers dug into the ground on Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen,” musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen, from the Technical University of Denmark, told the ESA about the live installation of the recording.

“The rumble of the Earth’s magnetic field is accompanied by a display of a geomagnetic storm which was the result of a solar flare on November 3, 2011, and it sounds pretty scary indeed,” Nielsen added.

Representatives from the European Space Agency and the Technical University of Denmark did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
