An Iowa man saved four siblings from a house fire after making a lucky mistake when he took a wrong turn and crashed into the raging inferno.

said Brendon Birt KETV, local ABC News affiliate that he took a wrong turn while driving in Red Oak last Sunday and saw the fire starting in the family home.

“I just felt like someone was there because it was so late at night, you know?” Birt said. “I just knew I had to act fast.”

He had a gut feeling that there were still people inside. Then he started banging on the windows and yelling “Fire!”

Video of the door slamming captured the heartbreaking moments.

“Every second that went by it just got worse,” Birt told the station of waiting for someone inside to get out of the fire.

Shortly after, three brothers – ages 8, 14 and 17 – ran out the front door of the house as flames swirled onto the front porch.

His 22-year-old brother walked through the front door moments later as the fire engulfed the front porch more and more, the footage shows.

“They walked out the door [and] I just felt like I just wanted to break down and cry,” Birt said.

The brothers said the banging and screaming woke them up as the smoke alarms didn’t go off.

The older brother, Bryce Harrison, told the local station that he had woken up to “a furnace of heat and flames on the front wall”.

“Everything was just black in the living room,” said his younger brother Christopher Lehman.

The children’s parents were out of town when they received the frightening call that their house had gone up in flames with their children inside.

His mother Tender Lehman said she was incredibly grateful to Birt.

“My kids wouldn’t have it, man. They’re safe and they’re safe because of him,” he said. “I mean, lives were saved here.”

Five of the family’s dogs died in the fire, while two survived.

The family’s home was completely destroyed by the fire, but Tender Lehman said she was just thankful her children made it out unharmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
