The 39-year-old was made as a man killed in the parking lot of Homewood CVS
A 39-year-old Birmingham man has been identified as the victim killed in a shooting in the parking lot of a Homewood CVS.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Eric Steven Kaczmarek.
The shooting happened at 5:31 pm Saturday in the store at the corner of West Valley Avenue and Green Springs Highway.
Kaczmarek was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 pm.
Police have not announced any arrests in the fatal shooting. Authorities said the incident appears to be drug-related.
A witness, who asked that her name not be used, said she had just arrived at the store after dropping her daughter off at the airport when she heard a loud noise she thought was a car backing up. .
She looked at the car next to her, and saw the victim get out of a vehicle. So this car left.
Only one shot was fired, he said. “It was strong,” he said.
Kaczmarek, he said, held the neck area as he approached the store to ask for help. He then fell to the ground.
The woman told store workers to call 911, which they did. Store employees then applied pressure to the man’s wound while they waited for medics to arrive.
“It was scary,” he said. “I was crying. I felt so helpless.”
She said it appeared the shooting happened in the car in which the victim was a passenger. The car was back in the parking lot.
“It just shocked me more than anything,” he said.
The fatal shooting is Homewood’s third homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 166 homicides, including the three in Homewood.
