The suspect intends to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and “break her knees,” the San Francisco DA says.

David Wayne DePapethe man accused of trespassing Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and violently attack her husbandintended to kidnap and possibly break “his knees,” he said, according to court documents.

After her arrest, she told San Francisco police that “If Nancy [Pelosi] should she tell DePape the “truth,” he would let her go, and if she “lied,” he would break “her knees,” so that she would be taken to Congress.

Nancy Pelosi he said in a statement Monday night that “Paul is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process.” Paul Pelosi was hospitalized after the assault and underwent what the speaker’s office described as “successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and and hands”.

The suspect had targeted Pelosi’s home to confront the House speaker, acting San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said at a news conference Monday. DePape allegedly forced his way through a back glass door, going into the second floor of the house, where Paul Pelosi was sleeping. He then woke up Paul Pelosi, who was dressed in a pajama shirt and boxers, and asked where his wife was, according to Jenkins.

Paul Pelosi then tried to get to the elevator in Pelosi’s home, Jenkins said, and asked to go to the bathroom, where he made a 911 call. The defendant realized that Paul Pelosi had made a phone call, he said Jenkins. Two officers soon arrived, and when they did, they saw that the defendant was holding a hammer, which he used to strike Pelosi, Jenkins said.

The FBI affidavit filed in the federal case against DePape also said San Francisco police “recovered zip ties in Pelosi’s bedroom and in the hallway near the door to Pelosi’s residence.”

Law enforcement officials also searched DePape’s bag at Pelosi’s residence and found “among other things, a roll of tape, a white rope, a hammer, a pair of rubber and canvas gloves, and a newspaper,” the affidavit said. He claimed that Paul Pelosi said he had never seen DePape before.

DePape, 42, is charged with attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elderly person, and making threats against a public official and his family, Jenkins said.

Jenkins said investigators believe DePape planned to assassinate Paul Pelosi and that his actions were politically motivated. “What is clear, based on the evidence we have so far, is that this house and the speaker himself were specifically targeted by the defendant,” Jenkins said.

During the press conference, Jenkins also asked leaders and citizens “to watch the words we say and to turn down the volume of our political rhetoric.”

DePape he was also charged Monday with federal counts of assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court in San Francisco on Tuesday.

DePape also had a list of people he wanted to address, Law enforcement sources have reported on the investigation he told CBS News. Sources said he had planned to attack more people if he hadn’t been arrested after assaulting Pelosi.
