Tom Brady opens up about Gisele Bundchen divorce for the first time
brady discussed the topic on his weekly podcast “Let’s Go!” with interviewer Jim Gray. About 17 minutes into the 28-minute episode, Gray broached the subject by asking Brady about the things that were going on in his life “off the football field.” Bundchen’s name was not mentioned.
“There are a lot of professionals in life who go through things that they deal with at work and at home,” Brady said. “The good news, of course, is that it’s a very amicable situation and I’m really focused on two things – taking care of my family and certainly my kids. And second, to do my best to win football games.
“That’s what professionals do. You focus on work when it’s time to work. Then when you get home, focus on the priorities that are at home. All you can do is do the best you can while I’m working and while I’m a father.”
Brady has not faced the media since the divorce was announced. The Bucs played Thursday night, and he and Bundchen confirmed their divorce with social media statements early Friday. Discussing a topic as painful as divorce on a public platform cannot be easy. It’s understandable why Brady would do this on his own terms via a podcast bearing his name.
Brady and Gray kept the discussion of his personal life brief, and he brought up the subject in relation to his dual roles as a professional athlete and father.
“That’s what it means to be a pro,” Brady said when asked if splitting up was difficult. “I’ve dealt with a lot of challenging situations on and off the pitch over 23 years, and a lot of it happens in front of a lot of people. …
“Everyone goes through different things. We all have our unique challenges in life. We are all human. We give our best. I have incredible parents who have always taught me how to do things right, a great father to my kids and always try to do the right thing.”
Brady and Gray then turned their attention back to football, which isn’t the easiest of topics either given a 3-5 start for the Bucs.
“Losing sucks,” Brady said. “Nobody feels sorry for the Bucs. We know this. And we have to change it.”
Brady previously described the split as “painful and difficult” in his social media announcement. The couple confirmed their divorce amid speculation that Brady’s decision to return to the football field this year played a role in their imminent split.
“We have come to this decision to end our marriage after much deliberation,” Brady wrote. “Doing this is obviously painful and difficult as it is for so many people who go through the same thing every day around the world. However, we wish only the best as we move toward new chapters in our lives that have yet to be written.”
Bundchen wrote in her statement that the couple had “grown apart”.
“The decision to end a marriage is never easy, but we have grown apart and while it’s obviously difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and always wish Tom the best .”
