World Series Game 3 postponed: Rain postpones Phillies-Astros to Tuesday, changing schedule for 2022 Fall Classic

That Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies must wait another day to resume World Series. Game 3 of the Fall Classic has been postponed due to rain, MLB announced Monday evening. It will be played on Tuesday instead and the rest of the series will be pushed back a day. Between game 5 and possibly game 6 there will be a free day for travel.

Here is the new World Series schedule:

• Tuesday 11.1: Game 3 at 8:03 p.m. ET in Philadelphia
• Wednesday 11 February: Game 4 at 8:03 p.m. ET in Philadelphia
• Thu, Nov 3: Game 5 at 8:03 p.m. ET in Philadelphia
• Fri, Nov 4: Day off
• Sat Nov 5: Game 6 at 8:03 p.m. ET in Houston (if required)
• Sun 6 Nov: Game 7 at 8:03 p.m. ET in Houston (if required)

Light rain began falling around 6pm ET at Citizens Bank Park and will increase in intensity around 9pm ET and continue into early Tuesday morning. Current conditions suggest the Astros and Phillies could start Game 3 as planned, but once the rain picks up later in the night they would have to take a break and the game would likely be suspended. MLB makes all postseason weather-related decisions, and the league prefers to play nine innings straight whenever possible.

When the World Series finally resumes Tuesday, Phillies will be left-handed Ranger Suárez (10-7, 3.65 ERA) and Lance McCullers Jr. (4-2, 2.27 ERA) are said to be the starting pitchers.

Coincidentally, Philadelphia was the scene of MLB’s most notorious weather issue in the World Series. Game 5 of the 2008 World Series was suspended due to rain in the sixth inning. That rays Tie the game 2-2 in the previous half inning while the clubs played through a downpour. After that, then-commissioner Bud Selig declared that all World Series games must consist of nine innings.

“I didn’t want to let that happen” Selig told the Associated Press when asked about the possibility of a rain-shortened World Series. “I have to use my judgement. The game would have been delayed by rain until weather conditions allowed us to continue. And that was maybe 24 or 48 hours, who knows?”

Game 5 continued the next day and the Phillies clinched their first World Series title since 1980 thanks to Pedro Feliz’s RBI single in the seventh inning.
